Sabbath School Lesson - A Conscience Seared |
Posted: 25 Mar 2010 06:26 AM PDT "Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him" (1 John 2:15, NKJV). What is this text saying? Does it mean that God doesn't love those who love the world, or that those who love the world don't love God? Explain. This passage is addressing what are your desires, and what is it that you really love. Where do you invest your best energy and who do you think of and meditate on. If the world has this appeal to you then this is most likely what you love. The passage going on to talk about the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. If these things consume you rather than the things of God then you are probably in love with the world. This does not mean that God does not love you because "God demonstrated His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us"(Rom 5:8)Our love for God is seen in our desire to serve him and our obedience to his commands. If we do not obey Him then we do not truly love Him.(John 14:15) How can a person know when his or her love for the world has superseded his or her love for God? What signs should we look for? This question is what do you spend your time doing and what do you spend your time thinking about. If you do not spend any time with the things of God most likely you are consumed with the world. The hallmarks of the christian life are prayer, bible study worship, and witnessing. If you find that you are not doing any of these it is a sign to look out for. Other things will try to take away the time you need for prayer, and worship but never let this happen. What aspects of the world do you struggle with the most? What things do you find alluring? How can you learn to fight the fight of faith and not get swept up in something that, in the end, cannot satisfy and will destroy you? We must learn to really trust God, its scary sometimes but God will allays come through for us. Prayer: Father thank you for loving us with an everlasting love. I pray that you will help us to continue to reach out to you and to invest our time and energy in the things of God. In Jesus name we pray amen. |
