Read Acts 17:5-9. According to this passage, what was the primary motivation for the opposition to Paul's message? What statements did his opponents make to get the city authorities interested in the case? How did those authorities respond?
In this passage we see the that the people were envious of Paul. The people felt that they were doing things contrary to the laws of Cesar. According to this text the message of Jesus Christ was disruptive to their community. The people were afraid that this new message would change the old order of things. The people appealed to the laws of Cesar to see if some type of offense could be brought against Paul. The passage says that after they had taken security they let them go. It appears that the opponents were more concerned than the city officials about what Paul was preaching.
Jealousy and envy can destroy us. What can we learn from the life and teachings of Jesus that can help us gain victory over these deadly sentiments?
You are able to overcome the things which easily beset you. Jesus offers you the power to be an overcomer. Jesus teaches you that we should have love in our hearts for one another and let the only debt we owe be a debt of love. To hold grudges and to be jealous is something that will dry up love in your heart. You must learn how to forgive , and learn how to be forgiven. Jesus is ready and willing to help you with every challenge you may have.
Prayer: Lord Jesus thank you for your word today. Help us to understand that we will have opposition but you will help us to be your witnesses. Thank you in Jesus name amen.
