Posted: 03 Jul 2012 03:34 AM PDT Read Jeremiah 23:1-6, Isaiah 9:1-7, 53:1-6, Zechariah 9:9. List the characteristics of the future deliverer that you find in these texts. What kind of "conflicting" images appear here?
When looking at these passages could see how there were two views of the Messiah. In some of these passages we see a ruling king and in other passage we see a suffering servant. These aspects of the Messiah appear to be in conflict. When Messiah comes He will establish justice and righteousness in all of Israel. On the one hand we see a triumphant reigning king , and on the other hand we see a humble self abnegating king. Jesus Christ brings these two views of the messiah together. I can see how there would be confusion about the characteristics of the Messiah. In ancient times, the Jews were confused about the first coming of the Messiah. Today, we find much confusion about the Second Coming, as well. What should this tell us about the need for truly seeking to understand Bible truth? Why can false doctrine be so problematic? One thing that is for sure is that history tends to repeat itself. If the Jews of Jesus day misunderstood the first coming we are not immune from misunderstanding the second coming. As we search the scriptures we must do so in humility of heart and ask for understanding. While we ask for understanding we must be willing to do the Lord’s will. False doctrine can be problematic because it causes you to reject , and not recognize the truth. The Jew of Jesus day persecuted the Messiah that they were waiting for. Today as we wait for the second coming of Jesus was must be careful that we do not persecute those who preach and teach the truth about the second coming. When we find ourselves in a position where we are closed off to truth we are left open to follow delusions. May the Lord help us all. Prayer: Lord God Almighty, help us to understanding understand your scriptures. Help us to release that which is false and to hold on to that which is true. Thank you, in Jesus name amen. |
