Read Acts 6:1–4 again. People were given similar responsibilities to those we would expect of deacons today. What reasons did the disciples give for not wanting to do this work? How are we to understand the principle being revealed here?
We should not neglect our gifts in order to do a gift which someone else is called to. We are called to function within our gift areas. While it was possible for the disciples to function as deacons their greater responsibility of preaching the word would have languished. We must be responsible enough to delegate that which someone else is better called to do.
Read Acts 2:40–47. What spiritual gifts were being manifested here, and what was the result, not only in witnessing but in discipleship? What important lessons can we take from this for ourselves?
In this passage we see the gift of hospitality and community. The young church had all things common and gave to others as they had need. This is also an important aspect of church function. When we are all working together for each other the work of the ministry flows smoothly and effectively.
Think of your own part, your own role, your own ministry in the church. Where does it fit in with the mission of the church as a whole?
This is an important question that we all have to ask for ourselves.
Prayer: Father thank you for the gifts that you have given us help us to use them for the building up of your church. In Jesus name amen.
