Sabbath School Lesson - The Holy Law |
Posted: 17 Aug 2010 07:16 AM PDT The Holy Law - Tuesday's Lesson Read Romans 7:12. How do we understand this text in the context of what Paul has been discussing? When Paul makes this point about the law He wants us to know that there is nothing wrong with the law. The law has a specific function to show what is right and what is wrong. The law never was intended to save us only Jesus can do that. Whom does Paul blame for his condition of "death," and what does he exonerate? Why is that distinction important? Rom. 7:13. Paul blames sin which is inside of him for his condition of death. This exonerates the law as the reason for his condition of death. This distinction is important because the law does not inherently bring death but it is the breaking of the law which brings death. When we are sinful the law is against us , but if we keep the law it is a law of life. Why was sin so successful in showing up Paul as a terrible sinner? Rom. 7:14, 15. Paul here is pointing toward a number of things which makes him a terrible sinner. One is that he does not always understand what he is doing. In addition to this sometimes he practices what he wants to do but he does the thing that he hates. Moreover Paul states that the law is something which is spiritual but he is carnal. The law differs vastly from the natural heart which make us come in constant conflict with it. What has been your own experience with how sin enslaves? Have you ever tried to play with sin, thinking you could control it as you wished, only to find yourself under a vicious and merciless taskmaster? Welcome to reality! Why, then, must you surrender to Jesus, and die to self daily? We can not play with fire and not get burned. We must surrender our lives over to Jesus daily and ask for His help in this Christian battle. Jesus is our only hope. Prayer: Father thank you for your holy law. Help us to gain strength to resist the evil one , Father please lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Thank you in Jesus name amen. |
