Sabbath School Lesson - “No Greater Burden” |
| Posted: 07 Jul 2010 02:00 AM PDT Read Acts 15:5–29. What decision did the council come to, and what was their reasoning? In this passage we find that there were some from the sect of the pharisees who wanted the gentile Christians to be circumcised. The desire of the Pharisees brought about a dispute in the first century church which lead to a council to discuss the matter. At the council Peter reminded the brethren that the same Holy Spirit which worked in them worked in the gentiles as well. He continues saying that God makes no distinction between them cleaning their hearts both by faith. James also speaks up and quotes the words of the prophets which show that it is God's will to reach the gentiles. Based upon this James's judgement is that they do not trouble the gentiles. They resolved to lay no greater burden on the gentiles than the essentials. I like the way that God tries to make things simple for us even when others try to give us a hard time. Praise God for His amazing grace. What rules were placed on the Gentile believers (Acts 15:20, 29), and why these specific ones? These essentials given to the gentiles where to Abstain from things offered to idols ,from blood and from things strangled and from fornication. They agreed that if gentiles does these things that they would do well. The reason that they agreed to these specific rules was that they did not want the gentiles to do anything which would cause them to be an offense to the Jews. I believe that these things where ingrained into gentile culture which made it necessary to give special attention to these matters. Could we, in some ways, be laying burdens on people that are not necessary but are more from tradition than divine command? If so, how? Bring your thoughts to class on Sabbath. It is very much possible that we are doing this. Often times we have our pet ideas and our personal preferences which have nothing to do with salvation. We make these tests for other people and when they don't meet out tests we deem them not to be full Christians. We must ask God's help to keep each one of us from being a stumbling block to our fellow Christians. We were not meant to tear each other down but to lift each other up. Prayer: Father we thank your for all that you have done for us. Help us to be strengthening agents for our brothers and sisters in Christ. Help us to see the essentials of Christianity and not to get distracted by the side issues. Thank you in Jesus name amen. |
| Posted: 06 Jul 2010 06:36 AM PDT Tuesday's Lesson - What Must I Do to Be Saved ![]() Read Acts 15:1. What issue was causing dissension? Why would some people believe that this wasn't just for the Jewish nation? See Gen. 17:10. Here in acts we see that there were some who came teaching people that we must be circumcised in order to be saved. In Genesis we find that God established a covenant that every male should be circumcised. The question now is if this is necessary for salvation. The Jews, after all, always had prided themselves on their divinely appointed services, and many of those who had been converted to the faith of Christ still felt that since God had once clearly outlined the Hebrew manner of worship, it was improbable that He would ever authorize a change in any of its specifications. They insisted that the Jewish laws and ceremonies should be incorporated into the rites of the Christian religion. They were slow to discern that all the sacrificial offerings had but prefigured the death of the Son of God, in which type met antitype, and after which the rites and ceremonies of the Mosaic dispensation were no longer binding. Read Acts 15:2–12. How was this dispute to be settled? This dispute was settled by the fact that we are all are saved by grace through faith. The Jews nor the gentiles are saved by circumcision they are saved by the grace of God. If neither of them are saved by the act of physical circumcision but the circumcision of the heart through Christ why should physical circumcision be made a requirement for salvation. The outward ceremony of circumcision was just something that pointed toward to what Christ wanted to do for all. Once Christ came and and enabled the fulfillment of this ritual it was no longer necessary. What is your attitude toward church leadership? How cooperative are you? Why is cooperation so important? How could we function if everyone was doing only what he or she wanted, independent of the larger body? It is necessary for us to cooperate with each other for the spreading of the gospel. God has placed leaders in the church for a specific reason. We must work with our leaders we must pray for them and we must encourage them. If everyone did what they wanted then there would be no order to carry out the work of ministry. We must seek to work together in the church. Prayer: Father thank you for all that you have done. Help us to understand that Christ is our only help and our only hope. Help us to trust in you. In Jesus name amen. |
