Sabbath School Lesson - Food in the New Testament |
Posted: 15 Jun 2010 04:24 AM PDT Monday's Lesson - Food in the New Testament Read 1 Timothy 4:1–5. What is Paul saying? Does this mean that we can now eat unclean meat? In this passage it says that we can eat foods which have been sanctified by the world of God and prayer. Unclean foods are not sanctified by the world of God. Therefore we can not simply pray over unclean foods and eat what we want. In Leviticus 11 we find which foods have been sanctified by God for us to eat. What's wrong with using Acts 10 as proof that the New Testament has done away with the clean/unclean distinction in regard to human diet? See Acts 10:28. If we examine this passage closely we see that it is not a matter of food that is being addressed. The passage is dealing with people. Peter had a problem with the way he interacted with the gentiles and God used peters vision to teach him. Peter learned that he should call no man common or unclean. Where are you in the whole question of diet? What improvements do you know that you should make in what you eat, in how you eat it, or even in the amount you eat? We must look at diet from a different perspective. The things God tells us to do in regards to our health are for our best interest. If we obey them we will live healthier and more fulfilled lives. It is to our advantage to listen to God in this matter. Prayer: Father help us to give our appetites over to you. Help us to trust you with our health. Thank you in Jesus name amen. |
