Thursday's Lesson - The Weekly Rest

Read Genesis 2:1–3 and Exodus 20:8–11. What do these verses tell us about just how fundamental the whole idea of rest is?

We find that from the beginning of this earths history God instituted a day of rest. God also writes this rest into the ten commandments so that we my remember and observe His day.

Jesus said " 'The Sabbath was made for man not, and man for the Sabbath!' " (Mark 2:27, NKJV). What was the context of the statement, and what did He mean?

During the time of Jesus the Sabbath was burdened down with man made traditions. When some of the religious leaders found Jesus and His disciples relieving their hunger on the Sabbath they were accused of breaking the Sabbath.

Jesus wants us to understand that the Sabbath was made for mans rest and enjoyment ,and not just for man to observe. The Sabbath is a beautiful gift from God. The Sabbath allows us time to reconnect with God and family. The Sabbath is also a time to reflect on God and His goodness. God made the Sabbath for man.

What is your Sabbath experience? Is it truly a delight, a blessing, a rest? Or, as in the time of Christ, has it become just another burden? How can you learn to derive all the benefits possible from this divinely given day of rest?

We must work so that we may be able to fully enjoy the rest that God offers us on the Sabbath. When we obey this divine command toward work it makes our rest heavenly. Also if we make Sabbath a time to reconnect with family, friends, and God we will look forward to it each week. Sabbath is a blessed gift and God knew that we would need such a day each week.

Prayer: Father thank you for your Sabbath. Help us to not only rest on the seventh day but to work during the six days. Teach us to fully enjoy the blessing of your Sabbath day. Thank you. In Jesus name amen.
