Sabbath School Lesson - Alcohol Today |
Posted: 24 May 2010 03:07 AM PDT Monday's Lesson - Alcohol Today What instruction, experience, and warnings are found in the Bible that warn us against alcohol? Judg. 13:2–8, Prov. 20:1, 23:31–35, Isa. 5:11, Eph. 5:18) Judg. 13:2–8 In ancient times individuals dedicated themselves or their children to God with the Nazerite vow. A component of this vow required the devotee to abstain from alcohol. Consecration to God requires all the senses which would be impaired by the use of alcohol. Prov. 20:1 Here the scriptures teach us that strong drink is a mocker. Solomon is saying that alcohol is like a detractor who opposes your every advancement and revels in your defeat. The person who succumbs to this folly is not wise, this behavior works against your best interest. Prov. 23:31–35 The consumption of alcohol can take you places where you did not intend to go. There you will find yourself doing things which you did not intend to do. The indulgence in such is an invitation to this reality. It is not a question of if but when. Isa. 5:11 , Eph. 5:18 There is a woe pronounced on those who rise up early and go to bed late to drink. Rather than being filled with alcohol the scriptures exhort us to be filled with the Spirit. Who does not know people whose lives have been hurt by alcohol, either through their own use or through the use of others. Why take a chance for yourself? What steps can you take to help ensure that you, or your loved ones, never start down this dangerous path, which promises nothing good but only sorrow and heartache? Excessive alcohol consumption has caused unnecessary hurt to families and our society. May it be strained relationships or deaths by drunk drives , the incidents can be enumerated many times over. We must solemnly consider these consequences and ask ourselves is it worth it? Is it work the exasperated relationships , is it worth the loss of life, and the lose of health. Prayer: Father you have given us these marvelous bodies to glorify you. Help us not to do anything to our bodies which may harm them. Help us to overcome any addictive and excessive , and destructive behavior. Thank you in Jesus name amen. |
