Sabbath School Lesson - Choices: Good and Bad |
Posted: 07 Apr 2010 05:16 AM PDT Read Hebrews 11:8–10. What does this tell us about Abraham and his choices? What can we learn from those choices? When we look at the story of Abraham we see that he made a choice to obey God based on faith. There was no logical reason that he had to obey there was no data that he could use but he simply trusted God. The text tells us that he did not even know where he was going. In thinking of our choices we can follow the model of Abraham and trust God and move forward by faith. This address's what is the basis for which we make our choices. While we must to think logically and reason to make good choices some choice come directly from simply faith and trust in God. We may not always understand the way that He leads us and guides us but we know what He has promised and the way He has led in the past. What were, however, some of the wrong choices that Abraham made? What were the consequences of those choices too? See Genesis 16; Gen. 21:9–14. When we look at this passage we find that sarai is unable to have a child. Because she is unable to have a child she offers her handmaiden over to Abraham as a wife. At this point Abraham had the choice to accept or refuse and he choose to accept. In chapter 15 God promised Abraham a son and apparently when it was not happening , his wife decided to take matters into her own hands. Because of this choice it caused a rift between sarai and hagar and subsequently she mistreated her. It is one thing to say that we should make right choices; it is another to have the conviction of heart to do it. What are ways that we can program our minds so that we are more likely to make the right choices? Ps. 119:11, Phil. 4:8, Col. 3:2? In order to make right choices we must base these choices upon God's word. We must have an internal desire to do the things which please God. When we desire these two things it will help us in our decision making process. In the end, we are free to choose for the Lord or free to choose against Him. There is no middle ground. We are on one side or the other. This doesn't mean that we don't make mistakes or fall (look at Abraham, for instance); it means, instead, that we must "purpose in our hearts" to seek to do God's will, whatever the costs. We must "purpose in our hearts" to choose what is right, and what is right is what God commands us to do. What is important, one thing that we should never forget, is that if we fall, if we make the wrong choices, God does not cast us off. The danger, instead, is that we can feel so guilty, we can feel so bad, that we are in danger of giving up. In such cases, our only hope is to cast ourselves at the foot of the cross and claim the forgiveness offered in Jesus Prayer: Father we are faced with so many choices day in and say out ,please help us to choose the things that please you. Father we particularly need your wisdom and we need to know your will, please show us. Thank you in Jesus name amen. |
