Sabbath School Lesson - How to Grow in Self-control |
Posted: 04 Mar 2010 10:38 AM PST "Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us" (Heb. 12:1, NKJV). Paul here again uses the race analogy that we saw earlier. What are some of the "weights" that you find are holding you back? One weight that sets us all back in the weight of sin. We are hindered by the sins which seek to hold onto us because we enjoy them so much. That which we give up in coming to Christ is noting compared to what He offers us in return. We also have other weights which may hold us back such harboring a unforgiving spirit, or holding in guilt or fear about something in the past. By the grace of God we must give all the things that hinder us over to Jesus, that we may accept His yoke which is easy and lite. Read Colossians 3:1-10. These verses give us rules for holy living as new persons in Christ. From these verses we learn several important things we must do to grow self-control in our lives. What do you find listed there, and how can you apply them to your own life and in a way that they will help get victory over the sin that so easily encumbers us? When I read this passage one of the things that struck me was the concept of seeking the things which are above. Paul actually says this phrase twice. The second time he says set your mind on the things above. I wondered what are the things which I have set my mind on and what are the things which I am seeking after. I believe that the admonitions that Paul gives for behavioral changes are important, but in the seeking of the things above seems to summarize the source of the essence of how to live differently. What are some areas of your life where self-control is definitely lacking? Why is it sometimes easier to get "victory" over dessert than to get victory over a spirit of bitterness and resentment? What changes can you make that will help you have more self-control? I believe the key to self control is prayer and persistence. Also we must seek to start with the little things and ask the help of God to build upon these little victories. Little by little as we trust and rely in God I believe we can have victories in this area. Prayer: Father you know our struggles that we have with self-control please give us strength in this area. We know that you are our only help , and our only power and our only success. Thank you in Jesus name we pray amen. |
