Sabbath School Lesson - Put on Kindness (Col. 3:12–14)

Put on Kindness (Col. 3:12–14)

Posted: 04 Feb 2010 03:18 AM PST

Read Colossians 3:12–14 and then rewrite it in your own words. In what ways do these verses reveal the essence of what it means to be a follower of Christ (notice the use of the term perfect or perfection? Also, think about how powerful our witness to the world would be were we to put these words into practice

I am writing this message to you because you are chosen by God.
You are chosen by God to be His witnesses therefore testify of
Him by being compassionate, kind, humble, gentle and patient.
You are to show these things to one another because you have
to remember that Christ showed the same love to you.

As a follower of Christ we must understand that we have been
chosen by God. Because we have been chosen by God He wants
us to represent Him in the way that we treat one another.

All the attributes that God wants us to have can be realized
by putting on love. This means to seek to love everyone
the way Jesus did. To have a life which is transformed by
and intimate relationship and commitment to Jesus
Christ.

We would have a powerful witness it we put these words
into practice. Jesus wants to reveal Himself through us
and He seeks to cloth us in His righteousness.

Prayer: Father please help us to be more like Christ. May our lives be a simple outworking of your will. Help us to not miss the most essential things in our Christianity for those which are only peripheral. Father please take us today and make us wholly yours. Thank you Father in Jesus name amen.

Kindness Returned

" 'Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you' " (Luke 6:38, NKJV). What is Jesus saying here? What principle of life is He talking about?

Jesus wants to teach us about divine mathematics. Usually when you
subtract from something in earthly mathematics it decreases. In divine
mathematics when you subtract you actually multiply.

Giving is something that marks the the person that is truly changed by
Jesus Christ. And the more that you give the more will be given to you.
We are promised to not only receive what we gave but we are promised
that we are to recieve more than what we have given.

When you give liberally to others and you use this measure, this is the
same measure that God will use when He give back to you. There is a
divine blessing when we cultivate an attitude of giving.

Naturally we are selfish people we like to protect ourselves and we like
to keep everything to ourselves. When we give away we starve the
selfishness out of us, and God is able to fill us up with more of His
character.

Often times it is difficult to give to others when you have nothing , but
God has promised to give us more than what we have given away.
This not only applies to material things, but most importantly spiritual
things.

The more love , the more kindness that you show to others the more
God is able to pour out on you the blessing of His spirit and His Joy.
God is looking for someone to bless , but we have learn to cultivate a
spirit of giving. What you keep to yourself you lose, what you give away,
you keep forever.

Read Luke 6:35. How does this fit in with what we've been talking about all week?

Jesus wants us to be His examples here on this earth. We must learn
to love everyone even our enemies. We must learn how to give with
no strings attached not expecting anything in return. This was what
Jesus was all about He loved people unconditionally.

We must learn to develop kindness toward individuals based upon our
love for them. And we must be filled with the love of God understanding
what great love He has shown us in order to truly love , and show
kindness to all.

We must seek to really live out what is means to be a Christian. God is
looking for those who desire to be filled with His Spirit. He is looking for
those to be the light of the the world and the salt of the earth.

Examine yourself. Is your kindness motivated by selfless and self-sacrificial love, or is it motivated even slightly by a desire to look out for number one? If it's the latter, how can you change?

We must really examine our motives for the reason that we do things.
Even our most sincere acts of service can be motivated by the a self
serving spirit and this is not pleasing in the eyes of God.

I believe that as we continue to look to Christ for help and continue to
press toward the example that He has set for us He will help us to become
more sincere. We must continue to pray, continue to read the bible
and to continue to witness. God will help us in all things even this.

Prayer: Father please help us to be more sincere Christians. We desire to be Your representatives here on this earth. We are tired of being fake , and false and living in rebellion to your will. Please take us and fill us up , we want to be your salt and your light. We want to be your hands to the hurting, your feet to the fallen, your touch to the weary. We need you today please send your Spirit of fall afresh on us. Keep us this day in the in Your care , in Jesus name Amen
