Sabbath School Lesson - Peace at Home

Peace at Home

Posted: 20 Jan 2010 04:08 AM PST

"Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord" (Heb. 12:14). "If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men" (Rom. 12:18, NKJV). What can we learn from the life and example of Jesus that can make these admonitions real in our lives? What are we doing (if anything) that makes them difficult, if not impossible, to become real for us?

From the example of Jesus we see that He did not intentionally
enter into conflict with individuals. We can also see that when
confronted on a point of controversy he refused to enter into
a debate, but He sought to draw out the eternal realities
   which were overlooked.

Jesus also taught kindness to those in need, and He also taught
kindness to our enemies. To live out this type of mentality it
requires for us to sacrifice ourselves. There will be times
in order to be at peace with people we will have to be humble
and refrain from argument, when we are unable to do this living
out a life of peace becomes difficult.

Study Romans 12:9–21. Identify verses in the passage that, if implemented, would help to bring peace to the home. Give a practical application for the verses you chose.

VS. 9 Talks about exhibiting a type of love that is without hypocrisy
and abhorring evil and clinging to that which is good. In the home
more love is necessary , in a home were love dwells the peace of
   God will take up residence.

Also sometimes negativity and evil are embraced rather than
good , this takes away from the peace of the home. By
cherishing the good, beautiful , the lovely it brings the
atmosphere of heaven in to the home.

VS. 10 Admonishes us to be devoted to one another in brotherly
love and to give preference to one another in honor. Again love
manifested in the home will help with some of the difficulties in
in the home. The passage also talks about showing preference
to one another , this will help to remove us from our selfishness
   and self-centerdness.

VS. 12 Talks about being devoted to prayer. A home which is
accustomed to prying for one another and bearing one another
burdens in prayer is a home where the peace of God dwells.

VS. 14 Talks about blessing people , and that we should bless
and not curse. To bless mess to want he best for people to speak
well of them to mean them no ill harm. I believe to bless is to
also do good things for them and show them love and kindness.

Having an attitude which seeks to bless individuals and not
curse them is helpful in the home. This is something which
will also help to keep the peace.

VS 21 Talks about not being overcome by evil but overcoming
evil with good. In our home lives when we are tempted to
to render evil , evil for evil we must realize that this
only perpetuates the evil. We should rather seek to overcome
this evil by replying to it with good.

Imagine what our homes would be like were we to, indeed, reflect these principles! Imagine what it would be like if we would learn to think of others before ourselves; imagine if we showed others unconditional love, even when folk didn't deserve it. Imagine if we forgave those who hurt us. Imagine if we were as concerned about the well-being of others as we were about our own selves. Though the implementing of these principles wouldn't solve all our family problems, no doubt they would greatly help!

Prayer: Father we need you more than ever to manifest yourselves in a tangible way in the relationships that exist in our homes. Father please speak your peace over strained marriages and strained relationships. Father where there is and an atmosphere of hate and envy and strife replace it with faith , hope , and love. Thank your for your precious blood which washes away all our sins. In Jesus name I pray amen.
