Sabbath School Lesson - Patience Required

Patience Required

Posted: 25 Jan 2010 02:03 AM PST

Read Ephesians 4:1, 2. Look at the elements Paul presents for those who are to "walk worthy" of the Lord. Among them is patience. How is patience linked with the other attributes presented? That is, how do they feed into each other?

This passage connects humility and gentleness with patience.
To be humble is not to be proud or arrogant, pride and arrogance
will get in the way of being patient.

A gentle person is considerate and kind in their disposition. Being
considerate and kind allows you to have patience with people.

What is Paul's counsel on how we are to deal with those who may be weak in faith? Rom. 14:1, 15:1.

I Romans 14:1 we are admonished to accept the one who is weak in
and not to pass judgment on their opinions. In Romans 15:1 Paul
encourages us who are strong to bear the burdens of those without
strength, and not to only to desire to please ourselves.

Think about how patient the Lord has been with you. How does keeping that reality constantly before you help you learn to show patience with others? If the Lord treated you as you treated others, what do you think would be your fate?

If God were to treat us the way that we treat others some of us
would not have a chance. We must understand how gracious God
has been to us, and when we are tempted to be not so gracious to
others we should reflect on Gods grace to us.

Prayer: Father we thank you for your patience toward us. Please teach us how to be more patient as you are with us. Thank you Father in Jesus name Amen

Patience Is an Attribute of God

Why is God patient with sinners? (2 Pet. 3:8, 9). How have you seen the reality of this truth manifested toward yourself or toward others?

In the preceding verses mockers are said to arise in the last days
who point out that Jesus has promised to come for a long time and
the world is still the same from the beginning.

Peter points out that when they say this that they are forgetting
about how God destroyed the earth once by a flood. Also he continues
by pointing out that He did it with the old world then as he
promised then He will do it again.

The point is that the reason for the delay is not God's forgetfulness
but , it is Gods patience. God is taking what seems to humans, a long
time to come because He desires that all should repent and be saved.

The delay of God is an act of love and mercy.

How can we learn to do what the Lord calls us to do in Romans 15:5?

Within the passage we have the answer to this question. It is God
who gives us patience and endurance. Some translations of this
passage translate according to Jesus as following Jesus. From this
we can understand that we must also follow the example of Christ
which helps us to learn patience and endurance.

Prayer: Father thank your that you are patient with us so that we all may have the opportunity to be saved. Father teach us to be patient as we follow the example of Jesus Christ. Thank you in Jesus name amen.
