Further Study:

Read Ellen G. White, "Christ the Center of the Message," p. 388, in Selected Messages, book 1; "The Call of Abraham," pp. 125–127; "The Law and the Covenants," pp. 363, 364, in Patriarchs and Prophets; "The Sermon on the Mount," pp. 307, 308; "Controversy," p. 608; "'It Is Finished,'" pp. 762, 763, in The Desire of Ages.

"In that age of caste, when the rights of men were often unrecognized, Paul set forth the great truth of human brotherhood, declaring that God 'hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth.' In the sight of God all are on an equality."—Ellen G. White, The Acts of the Apostles, p. 238.

"In order for man to be saved, and for the honor of the law to be maintained, it was necessary for the Son of God to offer Himself as a sacrifice for sin. He who knew no sin became sin for us. He died for us on Calvary. His death shows the wonderful love of God for man, and the immutability of His law."—Ellen G. White, Selected Messages, book 1, p. 240.

"Righteousness is obedience to the law. The law demands righteousness, and this the sinner owes to the law; but he is incapable of rendering it. The only way in which he can attain to righteousness is through faith. By faith he can bring to God the merits of Christ, and the Lord places the obedience of His Son to the sinner's account."—Ellen G. White, Selected Messages, book 1, p. 367.

"If Satan can succeed in leading man to place value upon his own works as works of merit and righteousness, he knows that he can overcome him by his temptations, and make him his victim and prey. . . . Strike the door-posts with the blood of Calvary's Lamb, and you are safe."—Ellen G. White, Review and Herald, Sept. 3, 1889.

Discussion Questions:

Why is it so important to understand salvation by faith alone without the deeds of law? What kind of errors can that knowledge protect us from? What dangers await those who lose sight of this crucial biblical teaching?

What other reasons can you give for the continued validity of God's law, even when we understand that the law and obedience to it are not what saves us?

Dwell more on this idea that because of the Cross all human beings are equal. Why is it that so often Christians, who have the Cross before them, seem to forget this important truth and can be guilty of racial or ethnic or even national prejudice? 3

"Genuine Humility"

Summary: Even though we've been warmly invited by God to understand who He is and what He says, the Bible reveals a precondition to real understanding: genuine humility. Why is it so crucial?

Verse: “Then said he unto me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words.” —Daniel 10:12

Sabbath School Lesson - Law and Faith

Law and Faith

Wednesday's Lesson - Law and Faith

"The principle that man can save himself by his own works lay at the foundation of every heathen religion. . . . Wherever it is held, men have no barrier against sin."—Ellen G. White, The Desire of Ages, pp. 35, 36. What does this mean? Why does the idea that we can save ourselves through our works leave us so open to sin?

The reality is that our own works will never be good enough. When we attempt to save ourselves by our own works we are left with no power to live righteous lives. When attempting to save ourselves by works it only leads us to more sinning.

This was illustrated in the garden of eden when Adam and Eve recognized they were naked they immediately created fig leaves. In this act we see how man after sin naturally wants to try and do something to save himself. What we do to try and save ourselves is useless because the bible tells us that without the shedding of blood there can be no remission of sins. Also the bible tells us that our righteousness is as filthy rags.

As with Adam and Eve and with us God must provide a lamb to cover our nakedness , to cover our sins. Jesus is the only one who can save us and to try to save ourselves is attempting an impossibility. Jesus is our only hope for glory. We must continue to look to Him the author and the finisher of our faith.

How did Paul explain the relationship between law and faith in Galatians? Gal. 3:21–23.

Paul here lets us know that the law is not contrary to the promises of God. The law has the function of pointing out that we are all sinners in need of a savior. It made way so that we could all that believe on Jesus might be saved.

How central is righteousness by faith to your walk with God? That is, what can you do to make sure it doesn't get blurred by other aspects of truth to the point where you lose sight of this crucial teaching? After all, what good are these other teachings without this one?

It should be central but often it is place in an obscure dark corner left for the "experts" to explain. It is not something which is really emphasized , where it should be central to our Christian experience. I believe that we must pray to God and simply ask for His help.

Prayer: Father we have long neglected the study of righteousness by faith and have failed to understand what it really means. Help us make this topic more central to our Christian experience. Teach us what it means truly. Thank you in Jesus name amen.

Watch the devotional now:

Summary: The Bible tells us that we should forgive as God forgives us, but what if we just don't feel like forgiving someone?

Verse: “Commit your works to the Lord, and your thoughts will be established.”
—Proverbs 16:3
