The Law Established - Sunday's Lesson


Read Romans 3:31. What's Paul's point here? Why is this point important to us as Adventists?

Here in this question Paul is asking if the law is made void by faith? In fact he says that the law is established by faith. This passage lets us know that the law is not in opposition to faith but it works in conjunction with faith.

Adventists desire to uphold God's ten commandments therefore they are often accused of trying to subvert Christ's work by trying to keep the law. The reality is that faith in Jesus should lead you to keep God's laws. It is not that these laws save you but in your obedience to God's law you testify of your faith in Him.

Read Romans 4:1–8. How does this show that even in the Old Testament, salvation was by faith and not by works of the law?

In this passage we understand that through faith we are given credit for the righteousness of Jesus. The bible tells us that our lawless deeds are forgiven and our sins are covered. The bible sites the example of Abraham as one who believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness. Abraham stands as an example of how even in the Old Testament salvation was by faith.

Dwell for a few minutes on David's sin and restoration (2 Samuel 11, 12; Psalm 51). What hope can you draw from that sad story for yourself? Is there a lesson here in how we in the church should treat those who have fallen?

We serve a God who is a God of mercy and grace. When we see how David was restored there is hope for us as well no matter what we have done or what we are going through. We too must learn to deal with people in the same grace that God extends to us.
