Sabbath School Lesson - Destruction of the Midianites

Destruction of the Midianites

Read Numbers 31, the story of the destruction of the Midianites. What are some of the hard things in this account that make it difficult for us to understand today?

This story is remarkable account of how the children of Israel go
to war against the Midianites. In this passage all the men of
midian were killed including the five kings of Midian along with
   the prophet Ballam.

Also as we read the story we find that all the women of Midian who
had causse the children of Isreal to go into idolatry were killed
as well. The girls which had not know a man intimately were spared
   for themselves.

Here in this story we see a total destruction by God's people of
an entire country. It is difficult to understand how God could be
   connected with such destruction.

It appears that such action as described in this passage are
contrary to the character of an infinitely loving God. We must
also understand that even though God is a God of love He is
   also a God of justice.

The sins of the Midianites had reached the point were it was
necessary for God to execute His Judgment. The Israelites were
simply as His instruments of war.

Read Deuteronomy 21:10–14. How does this help us better understand what was going on with those women who were taken as prisoners by the Israelites? In what ways does this help us better understand Numbers 31?

This passage helps us to understand that God anticipated such a
situation and prescribed specific regulations for such incidents.

Prayer: Father we know that you do not take pleasure in the destruction of the wicked. I pray Father that we will turn our lives fully over to you least we perish. Father we want to be on your team. Thank you in Jesus name Amen
