Between Saul and David

Read the following glimpses into David's life before he became king: 1 Samuel 16:6–13, 17:45–47, 18:14, 24:10, 26:9, 30:6–8. What does this tell us about David?

These scriptures give us a peak into the life and character of the David. From David’s humble beginnings God developed David into a mighty warrior and king. When Samuel came to Jesse to anoint one of his sons, David was not even considered to be the one Samuel was commissioned to anoint. After Samuel saw all of Jessie’s sons he inquired if there was yet another son, David emerged and the one who was rejected by his Father and brothers was accepted and anointed of God.

As David grows and matures one fateful day he is confronted with a Giant. Thou all tremble in fear David rests his courage in his great God. David takes Goliath’s challenge, and through the Lord he is able to defeat Goliath. David was a man who was blessed of God and He manifested exemplary integrity while being chased by Saul for many years. David trusted in God and even when all seemed lost, he knew how to get a prayer through when it was needed the most.

See Psalms 32:1–5, 51:1–6. What crucial concept is found in these texts that is so central to faith?

David was an amazing man yet we find that he was someone who was not without fault. These two passage record Davids prayers after his grievous sin against God. The essential characteristic to Christianity that David manifests is repentance of heart. Though David sinned He came to God in sincere repentance. David surrendered all to God and God heard and answered his prayer.

Ask yourself, how does what goes on inside your heart differ from what people see of you on the outside? What does your answer say to you about yourself?

We need God to ask God to help us to be authentic Christians. He is willing to help us more than we are willing to ask.

Prayer: Father thank you for all that you have done. Please teach us to come to you in sincerity of heart. Thank you in Jesus name amen.
