A Message from Shawn

Dear Friends of It Is Written:

Since the birth of the Internet, I have enjoyed the stories that seem to bounce from e-mail inbox to inbox. Sometimes, you get to see the story close to the time of its birth, and then a few weeks or months later, you get to see it again after it grows and people add new "facts" and "details" with each click of the send button.

In recent days, I've seen my own name circulating in a number of discussions, and I've noticed that once again, as the story spreads, people seem to be attaching "details" they appear to be getting from sources other than me!

I truly believe that people mean well, and have the best interests of the ministry at heart as they pass along information they've discovered or received online—but as stories take on a life of their own, this actually creates a stressful situation for my team at It Is Written. We end up spending our time fielding phone calls instead of getting on with the work of soul-winning.

So as friends and supporters of It Is Written, I thought I'd take a moment to give you the story from the horse's mouth, so to speak. Please feel free to disregard any other communication you may have received and consider this to be an authoritative source—and, if you share this with someone, please share it in its entirety and without editing.

To listen to some people, you'd think that I was either dead or dying. Some people—motivated by kindness—have started sending me "miracle cures" for diseases I didn't know I had! Here are the facts: I am not dead (a fact of which I am quite certain), and I am not dying—at least not any faster than any other sinner waiting for Jesus to come.

In fact, I reported to work this morning—as I did yesterday—and I'm writing this from my office.

Now to the facts.

Am I struggling with my health? There is no question about it. That part of the story is true. In recent months, I've faced some particularly difficult challenges—challenges that have made it difficult for me to stay on top of my rather broad duties as the Speaker/Director of It Is Written. Fortunately, I have one of the finest teams on the planet working in this ministry, and we have never skipped a beat—and never will.

As time has moved along, and after many consultations with some of the finest doctors in the country, it became quite evident that I was going to have to lay aside my responsibilities as Speaker/Director and take the time I need to recover. I will be doing precisely that, and I have been assured that the prognosis for a long and full life is very good.

So what does this mean for the plans and dreams of It Is Written? Frankly, not a lot. We are still pushing forward, and we will continue to be the front-edge evangelistic ministry you've come to love. Our plans are large and our vision is clear. That's because this has never been a one-man show. God has surrounded me with an incredible team, and they've been making me look good for years.

As my role now shifts, the ministry is clearly NOT lacking leadership or direction. In fact, I am sleeping very well at night, because I have personally seen how God is going to provide for It Is Written, and how He intends to keep our vision on track.

Our passion for evangelism is alive and well. Our planning process is still in high gear. Our Partnership weekends are still taking place, because there is much to talk about.

In the coming weeks, you're going to be amazed by some of the news that comes out of your ministry, and the miracles that God is working during this unique time of need.

I deeply appreciate your prayers and your support for this ministry—one that will continue to shine as brightly as ever for Christ until the day we see Him come.

Your brother in Christ,

Shawn Boonstra

Read 1 Kings 13:1–6. What happens here? What immediate lessons come to mind from this narrative? When we first approach king Jeroboam in this passage the bible tells us that he was “standing by the altar to offer incense.” What on earth is Jeroboam doing here? In 1 Kings 12:33 we are told that this [...]

"Making God's Word a Part of Your Life" (Rerun)

Watch the devotional now:

Summary: When you align yourself with the Word of God and make it a part of who you are, you've established something worth preserving forever.

Verse: "Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart, having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever, because 'All flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of the grass. The grass withers, and its flower falls away, but the word of the Lord endures forever.' Now this is the word which by the gospel was preached to you."

What similarities can be noted between the golden calf episode in Exodus 32 and Jeroboam's golden calves? See 1 Kings 12:25–33. The first thing that we see is the similarity between Jeroboam and Aaron. Jereboam and Aaron both show themselves to be unprincipled leaders at this point. Aarom sucumbs to the wants of the people [...]
