Summary: What is Paul's advice for dealing with frustrations within the church family?

Verse: "Now may the God of patience and comfort grant you to be like-minded toward one another, according to Christ Jesus, that you may with one mind and one mouth glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore receive one another, just as Christ also received us, to the glory of God."
—Romans 15:5-7

Sabbath School Lesson - The Model of Kindness

The Model of Kindness

Posted: 31 Jan 2010 03:24 AM PST

(1) To what high standard is Jesus calling us here?

When I listen to Jesus' words as they echo in my head and heart I hear
Him calling us to a higher order of living. Jesus wants us to love all people
even those who are our enemies. Jesus asks us to pray for those who
persecute us.

Jesus is calling us to love those who not only love those who love us in
return but also to love those who do not love us in return. To show love
to all people is an attribute of God.

(2) What reason does Jesus give for calling us to this standard?

Jesus wants us to love all people , because when we love only those
who love us then we are doing no better than the pagans. Jesus wants
to call us to a higher order of love in which we are indiscriminate , showing
love to all.

(3) Notice Christ's use of the word perfect in verse 48. What is the meaning of perfect here, and how can the use of the word here help us understand what it means to be perfect like "our Father in heaven" is perfect?

In this passage Jesus is talking about the love that we show to each other
and how we treat our enemies. We we pray for our enemies , and we show
love to everyone we are manifesting the character of God.

Jesus wants us to understand that this is the type of love that the Father
has. To practice this type of love is displaying a maturity of character which
is seen in the Father.

In this passage to be perfect as the Father is perfect means to show the
quality of love toward everyone that Jesus describes in the previous
verses.

What painful and deep changes must you make if you are going to follow Christ's words in these verses?

I like the way that Jesus clears us this whole perfection business.
Its really about the way we treat one another with love and kindness
even those how are our enemies.

Jesus has a lot of work to do in me , in regards to this passage. Jesus
words are very radical if you look at all the implications it may have for
your life. It changes the familiar associations we have , the cliques we form,
the exclusive attitude we tote about in our religion. It changes the partiality
we show in our love and our service for others. The reality is that sometimes
you have to do good for those who dislike you, and those who cause you to
stay in prayer to deal with them.

The most beautiful thing about this is that God is calling us to be His
children. He wants us to be in the family of God , and when we love
the way He loves we most assuredly show that God is our Father.

Prayer: Father please teach us to love, teach us to live , teach us to let got and let you have your with within us. Father we confess that our love is substandard and we need a more complete development of love. We have been partial, and fickle, selective , and unfair in our love. You blazed the trial , and set the path for us with your Son, Oh father teach us to love please. Thank you in Jesus name Amen.

Intercessory Prayers for Souls

Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. Matt. 18:19.

I remember in Battle Creek when there were those who felt the burden for the unconverted, and those who were in darkness and saw no light; then prayer meetings were appointed that they might make the strength of God their strength. In every case the heavenly intelligences worked with these efforts, and souls were saved.

If there is a large number in the church, let the members be formed into small companies, to work not only for the church members, but for unbelievers. If in one place there are only two or three who know the truth, let them form themselves into a band of workers. Let them keep their bond of union unbroken, pressing together in love and unity, encouraging one another to advance, each gaining courage and strength from the assistance of the others. Let them reveal Christlike forbearance and patience, speaking no hasty words, using the talent of speech to build one another up in the most holy faith. Let them labor in Christlike love for those outside the fold. . . . As they work and pray in Christ's name, their numbers will increase.

There is home missionary work that is to be done, and we hear the plea, So long as there is so much sin and such need of labor in our own country, why manifest such zeal for foreign countries? I answer, Our field is the world. . . . The Savior directed His disciples to begin their work in Jerusalem, and then pass on through Judea and Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. Only a small proportion of the people accepted the doctrine; but the messengers bore the message rapidly from place to place, passing from country to country, lifting the standard of the gospel in all the near and far-off places of the earth. But there was a preparatory work. The Savior's promise was, "But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me." Those who will not follow their own will and desires, but seek counsel of the Lord, will not be dull scholars for the Lord will teach them.

Troubles On All Sides

Troubles On All Sides

Seek ye the Lord, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the Lord's anger. Zeph. 2:3.

There is no sadder spectacle than that of those who have been purchased by the blood of Christ . . . turning to jest the messages graciously sent to them in the gospel, denying the divinity of Christ, and trusting to their own finite reasoning, and to arguments that have no foundation. When tested with affliction, when brought face to face with death, all these fallacies they have cherished will be melted away like frost before the sun.

How terrible it is to stand by the coffin of one who has rejected the appeals of divine mercy! How terrible to say: Here is a life lost! Here is one who might have reached the highest standard, and gained immortal life, but he surrendered his life to Satan, became ensnared by the vain philosophies of men, and was a plaything of the evil one! The Christian's hope is an anchor to the soul, both sure and steadfast, and entereth into that which is within the veil, whither Christ the forerunner is for us entered. We have an individual work to do to prepare for the great events that are before us.

The youth should seek God more earnestly. The tempest is coming, and we must get ready for its fury by having repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. The Lord will arise to shake terribly the earth. We shall see troubles on all sides. Thousands of ships will be hurled into the depths of the sea. Navies will go down, and human lives will be sacrificed by millions. Fires will break out unexpectedly, and no human effort will be able to quench them. The palaces of earth will be swept away in the fury of the flames. Disasters by rail will become more and more frequent; confusion, collision, and death without a moment's warning will occur on the great lines of travel. The end is near, probation is closing. Oh, let us seek God while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near! The prophet says: "Seek ye the Lord, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the Lord's anger."

"The Master Designer"

Summary: As we bask in God's presence—as we spend time with Him—we actually become more like Him.

Verse: "Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed—in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: 'Death is swallowed up in victory.' 'O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?'"

Blessings Upon the Watchful Ones

Blessings Upon the Watchful Ones

Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find
watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them
to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them. Luke 12:37.

God has always given men warning of coming judgments. Those who had faith in
His message for their time, and who acted out their faith, in obedience to
His commandments, escaped the judgments that fell upon the disobedient and
unbelieving. The word came to Noah, "Come thou and all thy house into the
ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me." Noah obeyed and was saved.
The message came to Lot, "Up, get you out of this place; for the Lord will
destroy this city." Gen. 7:1; 19:14. Lot placed himself under the
guardianship of the heavenly messengers, and was saved. So Christ's
disciples were given warning of the destruction of Jerusalem. Those who
watched for the sign of the coming ruin, and fled from the city, escaped the
destruction. So now we are given warning of Christ's second coming and of
the destruction to fall upon the world. Those who heed the warning will be
saved.

Because we know not the exact time of His coming, we are commanded to watch.
"Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find
watching." Luke 12:37. Those who watch for the Lord's coming are not waiting
in idle expectancy. The expectation of Christ's coming is to make men fear
the Lord, and fear His judgments upon transgression. It is to awaken them to
the great sin of rejecting His offers of mercy. Those who are watching for
the Lord are purifying their souls by obedience to the truth. With vigilant
watching they combine earnest working. Because they know that the Lord is at
the door, their zeal is quickened to co-operate with the divine
intelligences in working for the salvation of souls. These are the faithful
and wise servants who give to the Lord's household "their portion of meat in
due season." Luke 12:42. They are declaring the truth that is now specially
applicable. As Enoch, Noah, Abraham, and Moses each declared the truth for
his time, so will Christ's servants now give the special warning for their
generation.

Sabbath School Lesson - How to Develop Patience (James 1:2-4)

Sabbath School Lesson - How to Develop Patience (James 1:2-4)

How to Develop Patience (James 1:2-4)

Posted: 28 Jan 2010 04:30 AM PST

"My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing" (James 1:2-4, NKJV). What has been your own experience with the reality of these verses? What have you learned from the various trials you have faced that, in the end, have made you a better person, one who better reflects the character of Jesus?

I really like this verse in the book of James. James gives a
different perspective to the trials that we face in our lives.
When we look at trials we often get depressed and discouraged
but how can we count it Joy when trials happen to us?

We can count if Joy when we understand what is the final
product of the trials which we encounter. When we have a
knowledge this it helps us to experience our trials differently.

When you are tested , the true nature of your faith is revealed.
When you come up against difficulty you begin to see your
true self. By being tested we also understand what our
   level of patience is.

When you have that family member or that person in your life
who gets on your nerves your patience is being tested. When
you cant seem to reach past a certain struggle your patience
is being tested. When nothing seems to be going right your
   patience is being tested.

These experiences teach us how to persevere through difficultly.
Experiencing the trial slowly , continually and overcoming is
a precious work that is an unlikely blessing.

James in this chapter wants to give us wisdom in understanding
our trials. James says if any man lacks wisdom let him ask of
God. I challenge you to instead of complaining ask God for
wisdom to see the blessing in your trial, and let patience
   have its precious work.

Prayer: Father we thank you for the the trials that you send our way for the perfecting of our faith. We thank you that you see in us something precious you want to develop. Father thank you for your joy in the midst of the trial. Please take us an fashion us perfectly after your image. We desire to be like you. Give us wisdom to understand our trials. Thank you in Jesus name amen.

"The Rise and Fall of Human Kingdoms"

Watch the devotional now

Summary: The vision of Daniel 7 shows us history from God's perspective—the rise and fall of human kingdoms.

Verse: "I watched then because of the sound of the pompous words which the horn was speaking; I watched till the beast was slain, and its body destroyed and given to the burning flame. As for the rest of the beasts, they had their dominion taken away, yet their lives were prolonged for a season and a time."
—Daniel 7:11-12
